Today’s the day! Meghan’s debut as guest editor of the September issue of British Vogue hits newsstands today. I could cheat and sneak a peek online, but I’m waiting for my copy to come in the mail and I am dying to see it. I wonder how many pages it will be. I can’t wait to devour it!
Once I do read it I will post a recap of it. But until I get my hands on it, here’s what I know:
· Meghan was originally intended to be the cover girl, but instead asked editor-in-chief Edward Enninful via text if she could guest edit. His response? Of course!
· She didn’t want to be on the cover and guest edit because it would appear boastful. Instead, 15 “Forces of Change” are on the cover, and one mirror so that the reader can see herself (and himself, too!) and realize that no matter where you are, you can be a force of change, too. Meghan handpicked all of the cover stars because they were inspirational to her. Some of the 15 include Salma Hayek, Laverne Cox, Yara Shahidi, Christy Turlington, and Jane Fonda.
· She’s the first guest editor of British Vogue’s September issue in the magazine’s 103-year history.
· Meghan’s favorite poem, “A Note from the Beach” by Matt Haig, is featured. It’s about body positivity, and contains the word fuck, which I personally appreciate. Not sure about everyone else.
· Harry interviews conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, and reveals in the interview that he and Meghan only want two kids, max.
· Meghan has a Q&A with Michelle Obama over chicken tacos, where Mrs. Obama discusses motherhood in great detail, telling Meghan to savor it all.
· There are tons of new photos of Meghan while pregnant working on the magazine. In one photo, she wears a $3,980 dress from Gucci. Because why not? She also reveals she began the guest editing process at about five months pregnant – so around January of this year.
· I mentioned this on the blog Wednesday, but Meghan is teaming up with close pal and fashion designer Misha Nonoo to launch a womenswear capsule collection. For every piece bought, one piece will be donated to Smart Works – a charity of which Meghan is patron – and is much like Dress for Success here in the States.
· Meghan and Enninful chose famed photographer Peter Lindbergh to photograph the cover shoot. Meghan demanded she see freckles and that the photos be as minimally retouched as possible.
· I’m probably personally most excited about an essay from Dr. Brene Brown, who is my spirit animal and someone whose work you should read now if you haven’t already.
But Meghan isn’t the first Royal to appear in British Vogue. Kate covered the mag in June 2016 in honor of the magazine’s 100th anniversary, her first-ever fashion shoot. Beatrice and Eugenie were in the magazine last September in the pair’s first-ever joint interview. Diana graced the magazine’s cover four times, and Anne three times.
