Photo: Kate, Meghan, and those two dudes they always hang out with pictured in 2018, also known as the year both Duchesses killed it style-wise.
Look, no one is perfect, but in my eyes, there are very few times when the Duchesses get it wrong when it comes to fashion. There is the occasional flub, but, hey, who doesn’t have a misstep every now and then? Those are few and far between when it comes to Kate and Meghan’s fashions, and 2018 was a banner year for both of them when it comes to their style. Kate has always had good style, but, since Meghan came around in 2016, she’s really upped her game. Iron sharpens iron.
Here are my top three looks from each Duchess from 2018, keeping in mind that trying to choose the best looks from these two is like trying to choose a favorite flavor of ice cream at Baskin Robbins – they’re all good and, if someone offered any of them to me, I’d imbibe.
Kate
#1. For this look, Kate turned to her wedding dress designer Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, who designed this pleated cape gown with an embellished neckline. She and William were on day three of a tour of Sweden and Norway in February of last year and is she not just the most stunning woman you’ve ever seen? This look took my breath away. Her clutch is from Jimmy Choo, and her jewelry – both her earrings and her bracelet – were on loan from the Queen. Also, she’s seven months pregnant here!
#2. I love it when Kate recycles looks! She originally wore this lilac Emilia Wickstead dress on a tour of Germany and Poland in July 2017 but re-wore it last October at the Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit in London. She may be a Duchess, but she can repeat a good outfit if necessary! And can we just take a moment to appreciate those legs?
#3. At the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards last February, Kate wowed in this dark green Jenny Packham gown with a black belt. Her emerald necklace and earrings completed the drop-dead gorgeous look. At the BAFTAs that year, most wore black to honor the Time’s Up movement; however, Kate couldn’t participate because Royal protocol forbids her from engaging with political statements. She got as close as she could, though, without wearing black; I still feel that this is Kate’s subtle way of saying she supports the movement. Again, she is seven months pregnant here and looking as radiant as ever.
Meghan
#1. Meghan, Meghan, Meghan. What a stunner you are! Meghan wore a lot of blue last year (a subconscious nod to her being pregnant with a son, maybe?), but this was my favorite shade. She wore ocean blue in a caped gown by Safiyaa last October when she and Harry attended a dinner hosted by the president of Fiji when they were on their first tour together as a married couple.
#2. The boatneck! It became Meghan’s signature look last year, even appearing in her Givenchy wedding gown. She wore this navy Dior dress in July of last year at the RAF100 Service, which commemorated the Royal Air Force – of which her husband served in – at Westminster Abbey.
#3. To say Meghan’s fashion killed it on she and Harry’s tour to Australia, New Zealand, and around Oceania would be an understatement. Here she is at a dinner reception hosted by the King of Tonga in a white beaded cap-sleeve dress by Theia last October. The dress was made in two days but had to be redone with extra seam allowance for Meghan, who is nearly three months pregnant here.
Honorable Mention: I really love this red dress by Self-Portrait – which she wore in Tonga last October – but there was one little misstep. Our girl left the tag on her dress, which the eagle-eyed press, of course, made a huge deal of. This is why I love the Duchesses – they re-wear looks. They goof and leave tags on. They’re relatable! They’re human. But damn, they can dress.
